Back to Basics: Graphite
It’s been really good for me to go back to drawing. It’s not my first love as that will always be paint but I do often neglect my drawing skills in favour of a brush and then remind myself that I actually quite like drawing, it simply requires a different mind set when I start.
My brain is not methodical, it’s lateral and so it prefers the complications that painting, and particularly watercolour, throw up. It shies away from patience and prefers chaos whihc is probably why when I teach it at university, I teach drawing machines and expressive media rather than more traditional concerns.
I do, however, understand why people love it and so I wanted to challenge myself this month with media and subjects that needed me to concentrate, not get distracted and it the case of this broadcast, went back to basics to remind myself what materials I need and why.
I hope that what I share with you today is useful, do let me know what else you would like to see me discuss and keep scrolling for news about new tutorials, there’s a poll over on my social media channels asking what you would like answered in 2025, you can find it HERE in my Facebook group (you may want to join) so do feel free to get involved and have your say, I look forward to reading the suggestions.
After the broadcast has gone live you will be able to watch it back below, leave me a question in the comments either here or on YouTube and I will look forward to you all joining in, in the future, Ali
